Just remember that not all nouns that end in a are feminine.

For example: el poema and el mapa

In reference to definite and indefinite:

Definite articles refer to a specific item.

Hand me the book. Dame el libro. You have a certain book in mind.

Indefinite articles to a nonspecific item.

Hand me a book. Dame un libro. You really don't care which book; any book will do.
