¿Cómo se llama? is not "what is your name?" but more like "how are you called?" I understand how it's used, but sometimes there is actually a need to literally ask ¿Cuál es su nombre? For example, when helping someone fill out a form, sometimes I ask ¿Cuál es su nombre? ¿y su apellido?
