How long does it usually take someone to learn Spanish?

Because I'm having a hard!! Because I speak English and learned German. So I try to make every thing sound German.

There's a bunch of threads on this already. Short answer: Between 6 months and 6 years. How long did it take you to learn German?

Everyone is so different. I have reached the point that I can read anything in Spanish. I finished cien años de soledad, el amor en los tiempos del cólera, a couple of books by Allende and read several papers in Spanish each day. All that aside, I still cannot understand 50% or more of wait native spanish speakers say unless they speak very clearly.

Your experience (and mine learning Italian) is why I have tried to learn only by listening...I have just now started to read. Reading is so much easier. But I wouldn't fault someone for preferring to learn to read. The literature in Spanish is awesome! - Janice, Mar 23, 2010

I still don't know English and I've studied it for 60 years and had it in school for 18 years. Maybe I shouldn't be trying to learn another language!

I think that for getting by few months could be enough, like in my case, when I now can get by and have some conversation, but to know a language properly it can take one year or a few years. and of course it varies from person to person, I´ve seen that French, Italians and Portuguese having an easier time to learn español.
