Which is more often used for "Can you help me"? My sources indicate the latter.

I use both indistinctly. "Me ayudas" is more like "Won't you help me?"

you're correct that "me ayudas" = you help me. It's a general statement without inflection or the question mark

¿puedes ayudarme? = can you help me.

Unless you are a native speaker I must defer to Gekkosan. ¿Me ayudas? means "Won't you help me?" - jeezzle, Mar 23, 2010
As we can see, the question marks make a big difference. Miznandi caught it herself and added a second post with the questions marks, because "puedes ayudarme", without them, just mean "(yes) you can help me". - Gekkosan, Mar 23, 2010
A possible dialogue might be: Q: "¿Puedo ayudarte?" A: "Puedes ayudarme". (Yes you can) - Gekkosan, Mar 23, 2010

Puedes ayudarme or Me puedes ayudar = Can you help me?

Me ayudas just means "You help me", but seems like I'm wrong?

It depends on whether you phrase it as a question or not. If it´s a statement, then you are right, and it means "You help me (a lot - you're a nice buddy)". - Gekkosan, Mar 23, 2010
