I don't think it really matters a whole lot. Sometimes genitives are ambiguous. For example, there is an add for a soda where two people argue whether they should ask for "un seven-up" or "una seven-up".

That said, when talking about medicines, I tend to favor the masculine form:"El bendryl"; "El Tylenol", "El rebamipide".

Sometimes the article is avoided altogether, in order to solve that kind of problem:

"Necesito rebamipide en gotas de 200mg", or "Deme un frasquito de rebamipide 200mg" or, "Por favor ve a la farmacia y compra rebamipide 200mg".

If I must use the article, then as I said, I favor the masculine for medicines: "Por favor, pásame el rebamipide que lo dejé en la mesa".

The way I see it, when in doubt, make it masculine. (i.e., Gekkosan's 7-Up example, above) unless it ends in an "a". Then, it's probably feminine (i.e., la vendana, la pulsera, etc.) The only situation when this rule doesn't work (at least, from what I know) is "water". Even though "agua" is technically feminine, we still stay "el agua". Makes pronunciation easier. wink Hope this helps! smile
