musica bakalao?

I was reading a material for my Spanish class and came across this phrase: "...no me gusta mucho la musica "bakalao"." The dictionary meaning is dance music. Does musica "bakalao" mean disco-type of music? If so, only disco-type of music?

You might want to take a look at this web site.

I think the term came from "Bacchus" who was the god of wine and intoxication in ancient Roman mythology.

I think the site expalins it well enough. It's some kind of techno music and I think that kind of music is usually heard in discos. - Rikko, Mar 18, 2010

No, I thought at first it was baCalao, but when I checked with the dictionary, there are both bacalao = cod and bakalao = dance music. - Rikko, Mar 18, 2010

Dance music does not necessarily mean disco music. There are many different types of dance music: tango, salsa, samba, etc. These are only a few well known ones, but there are a lot more. Although I am not familiar with bakalao music specifically, I would be very surprised if it meant disco music.

Yes, but on the other hand, if the person in the reading material meant any dance music, it would almost mean like she does not like about 90% of all music since perhaps about that much could be danced to. That's why I thought maybe it's special type. - Rikko, Mar 18, 2010
