source of protein --see below

This is for an analysis of a weird story called "La Carne" by Virgilio Pinera: How would I say, "The whole town turned to their bodies as a source of protein" My main wonderment is how to say "source" because fuente de proteina sounds a bit odd.

You got it exactly right. Source is "fuente", and "fuente de proteína" is perfectly correct, however odd it may sound to you.

You can have: "fuente de alegrías", "fuente de inspiración", "fuente de orgullo y pasiones" - source.
