Orden and its plural

I have just come across the word orden (order) but in what I am reading the plural is written as órdenes. Why the tilde on the beginning letter?

Porque es una palabra esdrújula (ór-de-nes) y las esdrújulas siempre llevan acento

The "tilde" is there to keep the emphasis on the "or" part of the word after the "es" part is added to make it plural.
