¿Disculpe o Lo siento?

My understanding is that "disculpe" and "lo siento" can both mean "I'm Sorry." Are they simply interchangeable or are there situations where one is more appropriate than the other?

They are exactly the same, you can choose any of both.
Like "sorry" and "my fault".
