It is used as a pronoun, when you are already talking about something or someone in a conversation and do not want to keep repeating the name of the item or person over and over.

For example: Margarita da el dinero a Carlos. ~ Margarita gives the money to Carlos.

This sentence is not gramatically correct, because anytime you are talking about a person recieving the action (the verb), you need to add le before the verb. So the gramatically correct version of this sentence is....

Margarita le da el dinero a Carlos.

The pronoun 'le' can always be found before the verb, but when the verb is a gerund (i.e. haciendo), a command (i.e. aprende), or an infinitive (i.e. bailar), it can instead be attached to the end of the verb (i.e. haciendole, aprendele, bailarle).
