Cosmology vs. Mythology
What is the difference between mythology and cosmology..........I am trying to decide which is better for my paper. Here is the beginning of it if anybody is interested. 
I am not looking for debates I just can't decide which word to use in my paper.....is a rough, very rough draft of my paper.
Desde el comienzo de los tiempos la humanidad se ha esforzado por comprender el mundo que les rodea. Los mayas tenían un sistema de escritura que recordaba sus creencias. . Los signos y las figuras de los animales y los humanos no han sido descifrados por completo porque era tan complicado. Había dos tipos de escritura: los códices y los estelos. Los códices “consistían en unas largas tiras de corteza de árbol que eran dobladas en forma de acordeón”; sobre ellas se pintaban los jeroglíficos (Fox 8). La vidas de las códices era muy cortas. Según a lost-civilization.net, “After the Spanish conquest of the Yucatan, indigenous people were persecuted and most Mayan books were burned. But the stories were passed along orally” (1). Desafortunadamente, sólo cuatro códices mayas han sobrevivido: el Dresden, el Madrid, y el Paris. Existía otro códice se llama el Grolier y está en México D.F.; pero no todos los eruditos están de acuerdo que él es de origen maya. La Universidad de California se dice que, “The once-rich body of Maya codices also documented astrology, divinatory practices, history, crafts, and other activities” (1). For almost a century, the manuscript was lost. But it was rediscovered and eventually the bark-paper folding book was transferred to the Newberry Library in Chicago, where it is today (1). El Discovery Channel dice que, “El Chilam Balam de Chumayel narra un mito originario similar al Popol Vuh, donde los dioses del inframundo dominaban y tenían cautivo al universo.” Donde el Popol Vuh habla de la creación, la Chilim habla de los nueve niveles del inframundo y los trece niveles de los cielos. A las personas mayas, estos libros son como la Biblia de cristianismo y son el base de la mitología maya.

Cosmology is the study of the universe whereas Mythology is the study of legend and not necessarily truth.
I am not that familiar with the topic.I just wonder why you would think it was beyond your capability?
Can I add one word to yesero's definitions.
"Cosmology is (in origin) the serious study of the universe" despite the temptation to confuse it with astrology, myth and superstition.
I think cosmology is the best choice too

I am tempted to attempt a translation of your paper!? Sounds very interesting from my basic spanish understanding. cosmology or mythology? I think the cosmos help create the myths, we shall see...
I would like to reopen this thread. I have to write an eight page paper over the mayas and I would like to make it really interesting. all input is greatly appreciated. I plan on talking about the codices in depth. Do you think that is beyond my capability???
