"Sally was in the Navy"= "Sally era en el marino"?

Sally era una marinero.

Sally was a sailor.

I think marinera (adjective) means "marine" as in a marine animal and that the noun (marinero) is invariant. Who knows? They weren't female sailors when the RAE tossed a coin to make marinero masculine.
