el chandail
I know that sweater is el sueter, but in Spain I was corrected to say "chandail." Which is correct, "el sueter" or "el chandail?"

Are you sure that's spelled correctly? I found "chándal" but not "chandail" online.
As for your question, I'd say pay attention to what they tell you. I was in Mexico recently and used the word "chaqueta" to say "jacket" but I was immediately corrected and told to use the word "chamarra" instead: "chaqueta" in Mexico has a sexual meaning. 
I'm with Marianne here. There is quite a variety of terms that refer to clothing items used for keeping warm throughout Spanish-speaking countries, and even regions. What works in one place, would only produce blank stares or bashful giggles in other places.
"Chandal" (the correct spelling) is one of those very regional words. So is Chamarra.
But thinking about it, I'd be hard pressed to come up with a term that is universally understood in Hispanic cultures. I was going to suggest "chaqueta", but Marianne killed that for me.
