There are EXTREMELY important because they can change the meaning of a word.
You're looking at it as if it was English. In English, accents are just phonetic tools that tell us how to pronounce something.
In Spanish, accents are part of the spelling. And of course you know how important spelling is, because you could end up saying a different word entirely.
That's the case of si and sí. That accent doesn't chang ethe meaning of the word. It changes the spelling to a completely different word.
And now you know why accents are so important. ![]()
They denote how to pronunciation a word (where there is an accent, there is a stressed syllable, as in corazón, which means heart. Here the "o" is stressed)
It is also used to distinguish words--examples:
~si=if, sí=yes
~el=the, él=he
~más=more, mas=but
~tú=you, tu= your
~mi=my, mí=me
~ésta-it, esta-this , está-he/she/it/you(formal) is
~te= used as a direct pronoun, an indirect pronoun and for reflexive verbs for the word "you", té= tea
They indicate stress, or they can completly change the meaning of a word : el = the él = he
They tell you were to put the stress on a word, they can also change the meaning of a word
ex. cómo = how ... como = eat in yo form
