can you use 2 conjugated verbs in this sentence? would i use leer

you can use 2 (or more) conjugated words in Spanish, just like English.
"ellos abren los cuadernos y leen un libro"
They open note books and [they] read a book.
"ellos abren los cuadernos y leer un libro" They open note books and to read a book. (doesn't really make sense)
