La palabra "sí"

La palabra "sí"

A veces encuentro la palabra "sí" escrito en maneras en cual no me tiene sentido. Por el contexto me parece como significa "her/his," pero nunca he leído acerca ese uso. Por ejemplo: "antes de sí..."

También, he visto la frase "Lo que sí," cual creo que significa algo así, "that which is," pero no estoy seguro.

¿Alguién sabe más de esa palabra? Algo ayuda fuera muy apreciado, gracias!

Some facts...

  1. Sí can, of course, mean "yes."
  2. Sí can be an object pronoun for prepositions. Here it can mean himself, herself, itself, formal yourself / yourselves, or themselves, . Antes de sí = Before them.
  3. Sí can also be an emphatic term. Sí creo en esto = I DO believe in this

.

Some hearty conjecture (don't take this as fact unless confirmed by a native speaker)...

I think that it is the emphatic form you see in lo que sí (and other phrases like claro que sí). Although, it could just be "yes" I guess. I'm not too sure how lo que sí would be translated, but I think it might be shorthand for lo que sí es (meaning: what it IS). Or lo que sí + whatever verb is implied. Of course, I also think claro que sí is shorthand for es claro que sí + whatever verb is implied. Don't know if I'm right, though.

.

Here's a more detailed version of my logic...

  1. ¿Vas a ir a la tienda? Claro que sí
  2. ¿Vas a ir a la tienda? Es claro que sí voy a ir a la tienda
  3. Are you going to the store? It's clear that I AM.
  4. Are you going to the store? Of course!

.

  1. ¿Está esa caja roja? Claro que sí.
  2. ¿Está esa caja roja? Es claro que sí está.
  3. Is that box red? It is clear that it IS.
  4. Is that box red? Of course!

.

I'm not really sure how to do this with lo que sí, though. I would love to see the preceding sentence or two. Maybe...

  1. No creo que es una caja. Pero es lo que sí.
  2. No creo que es una caja. Pero es lo que sí es,
  3. I don't believe that is a box. But, that is what it IS.
