I am sure it's possible to learn spanish all by yourself - no courses. There are lots of grammar on the internet, free spanish videos about language and grammar. A great variety of activities - you can read poesy, newspapers or magazines on the internet, or other publications, depends what are you interested in. Also films, with spanish subtitles to improve your understanding of writing, or in spanish - to improve and reach a better understanding in pronounciation. Then music - find the lyrics and sing together, it's fun! And, of course, you need to practise every day. It's just less then a month that I am learning this language, but can truly say that i understand the bigger part of it. When you feel you're not a beginner, try searching free grammar or vocabulary exercises (games). Here are some sources that I am using - searching music on YouTube (there you can even familiarize with different slangs in comments), watching videos on BBC language column, reading grammar on studyspanish.com, and, of course, wathcing those marvelous videos here, on this site.

As my profesor say's Practica, practica, practica!! I am in your shoes wanting to learn Spanish. First of there is no Easy way as some people will have you believe. My advise go buy 501 Spanish verbs!!! Verbs (ar/er/ir/) are a major part of Spanish, if you don't learn the different conjugations(sp),you WILL be lost and give-up trying to learn, I'm in my 3rd semester of Spanish and besides school I use other resources, I study 15-20 hours a week, along with listening/watching Spanish programs,on a scale 1-10, I might be a 2. Have fun it's quite amazing.

Start here: http://www.spanishdict.com/learn

There are videos, followed up by flashcards, and exercises with visual and audio promtps. They are easy to understand, and the rules of grammar (those that actually exist) are presented in an easy to understand manner.

Also, you are going to want to listen to music as well as movies (originally filmed in Spanish). There is a big difference between the Spanish you learn in a classroom environment and Spanish spoken by native speakers (in Colombia, they seem to speak twice as fast as Americans). Don't let that scare you, they say the same thing about people who speak English.

hmmm...I"m not so sure about the speed thing...you should hear my daughter - married, living, working and speaking Spanish in Bogotá -, speak English....It´s like a long hum. Of course the operative word in your post is "seem". - Janice, Mar 6, 2010

I'd say the best thing you can do if you are able is to move to a Spanish speaking country. The next thing is that you need to realise if you want to learn a language you have to invest time into learning every single day. There are great websites you can find, but ultimately you are going to be better off finding a language school. You can also make language exchanges with people, this is where you find somebody with Spanish who wants to learn English and you help each other. Watching films and listening to music is also a great way to learn. I'd suggest you watch films that you've already seen in your native language though as if you have no idea what is going on they do tend to get a bit tedious after half an hour. Good luck!
