An interesting ancillary question is "what is the difference between "in between" and "between" in English, in fact.

hmmm...I am not sure I know.

But to return to your question, between is a preposition that seems to me from the examples in my Gran Diccionario Oxford can be translated in different ways into Spanish depending on context.

Look..."entre" is listed, but so is "de aquí al". And the last example translates to "de..a"

between (preposition) 1 (between two points, times, numbers) entre;

between now and Thursday de aquí al jueves;

It is closed between 1 and 3 Está cerrado de 1 a 3;

Between is also an adverb. Look at these two examples from my dictionary:

(adverb)

the one between = el/la de en medio;

There are very large houses and very small apartments and nothing (in) between.

= Hay casas muy grandes o apartamentos muy pequeños pero no hay nada intermedio

Here an example is.

The apple is in-between the mango and the banana.

La manzana queda entre el mango y el plátano.
