for example " the dog is toilet trained". Do you use the spanish words for 'toilet' and 'trained' or is there a different word for this phrase?

This is not as simple and straight-forward in Spanish as it is in English.

If you're referring to a pet, you might say something like "sabe usar el periódico" ("knows how to use the newspaper"), or "sabe dónde hacer sus necesidades" ("knows where to relieve itself").

If you're referring to a child, now, you would say something like "ya tiene control de esfínteres" ("he/she has acquired sphincter control"), or more informally "ya sabe ir al baño" ("knows how to go to the bathroom").
