Hola, Remember that Ser and Estar are too different words in spanish. If in a certain situation in the past made you shy, puede escribir: Estaba muy tímida. If shyness was a personal characteristic during your childhood, or at some point of the past, puede escribir: Era muy tímida.

It could be "Estaba tímida" if you meant that you were feeling timid.

You have the answer from Gekkosan but I would like to point out that there is no such word as estuvaba it is estaba.

" I was very shy" translates as "Era muy tímida" (female)
