what is it with ... there being so many couples around when you are single?
what is it with ... the hat you've started wearing?
This is colloquial so if you don't understand it's meaning I don't think it would translate literally. How would you say 'what is it with...' in Spanish?

Perhaps "¿Qué pasa con ...?" or "¿Qué hay ...?"
