If you like the answer the best, you can hit "accept" (or, you can accept it for other reasons).... By you hitting the "accept" button, the person whose answer you accepted gets 20 reputation points; and, once a person is accepted 50 times, he or she gets the "linguist" badge.

It's a way of showing appreciation for an answer to a question that you asked. It really should be given only after multiple answers have come in so that you can make a choice. It should not be used in a question where you are looking for a lot of answers or participation such as challenges and games until the very end has been determined because when many people see that a question has been accepted they bypass the question entirely.

I always thought that the accept button was there for 2 reasons:

1) to show that you've accepted an answer, and that no more needs to be said

or

2) to show that you like an answer, and to "reward" that person for giving you the best/correct answer in your opinion

When you accept an answer, you automatically give that person 20 rep points. This is different that the vote button, which also shows that you appreciate the answer, but doesn't necessarily mark it as "the best", and it only gives the person 10 rep (however, it does give you 1 rep)

it says that you have an answer that you are happy with, thatyou don't need any more answers for it also gets that person who posted it more reputation points

That is for the asker to see if he/she/it accepts the answer and think it is right
