¿Cómo es? literally means "How is?" but it also can mean "What is ..... like?"
Like the example about:
¿Cómo es la casa? = "How is the house?" or in other words "What is the house like?"

Its usually a request to describe the physical characteristics of something:
¿cómo es la casa? (describe the permanent characteristics of the house)
¿cómo es (ella)? (describe her: is she tall? blonde? )
