Hmm, this is a good question.

Gustar and encantar trade meanings when switching between people and non people. But if you love your dog like a person it confuses things. When used for people gustar is used for love and encantar is used for like, but when used on non people gustar is for like and encantar is for loved.

I would just go with "me gusta mi perro." Everyone will understand that you like your dog.

I think it would be: yo amo a mi perro. You need the "a" in there because it's an animal, and every person and animal gets thier own "a" because. . .well, they're people and animals, therefore important. My Spanish teacher last year called this a "personal a". ¡Espero que sea gran ayuda! (I hope this will be a big help!) grin

You don't necessarily have us the personal a with animals. Just pets, and even then it isn't always done. - Fredbong, Feb 27, 2010
