501 is the classic verb reference book, though there are some new competitors in the market done in a similar format.

It's really not that much different than information readily available on SpanishDict.com via the Conjugation tool coupled with the dictionary entries.

However, I caved and bought a verb book anyway. After a lot of research, I bought the "Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs", which is a competitor that is supposedly an improvement on 501.

Both are very similar. Each one gives you a page for each verb that resembles the SpanishDict conjugation page. They both add some useage examples. Big Red gives better examples.

501 has a list of 55 essential verbs. You get an extra page of info and useage on each of these-

List of Essential 55 Verbs (From 501 Spanish Verbs - Christopher Kendris

acabar andar aprender caer/caerse cantar comenzar comer comprar conducir construir conocer construir contar creer dar deber decir dormir entrar escribir estar estudiar gustar haber hablar hacer ir/irse leer llamar/llamarse llevar mirar/mirarse oír pagar pensar perder poder poner/ponerse quedarse querer saber salir sentir/sentirse ser tener tomar traer venir ver vivir volver

Big Red has "The Top 50 Verbs" and does the same thing, giving you an extra page.

Top 50 Verbs (From Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs - Gordon/ Stillman)

acabar alcanzar andar buscar caer comer conocer dar deber decir dejar dormir echar esperar estar faltar hablar hacer ir jugar llegar llevar meter mirar oír pasar pensar perder poder poner quedarse queder romper saber sacar salir seguir sentirse ser servir tener tocar tomar trabajar traer tratar valer venir ver volver

Note that Big Red doesn't include haber in it's list of top 50! That seems a little bizarre to me and made me a little bit mad when I found that out. But all in all I'm pretty happy with my decision.

Either book is a good thing for your library. I bought mine at Border's for $19.95, but they had 501 for a few bucks less.

Weird. I have the big red book of spanish idioms. - jeezzle, Feb 27, 2010
Perhaps because haber is never really a stand-alone verb (it is an auxiliary verb), save for its special "hay" form??? (I'm guessing, of course) - webdunce, Feb 28, 2010

Well, I only have the Little Red Pocket Book of 333 verbs. No wonder I'm lost around here. I don't have half of the verbs that I should.

Of course, the index has thousands of verbs and their definitions, just not conjugated.

If we all have these books, I wonder why there are so many conjugation/tense/mood errors here?

I have "601 Spanish Verbs" by Berlitz. I'm not sure if it is one of the competitors that Goyo mentioned or not.

It is similar to what is offered on this site. I just like to have it for when I can't be around a computer. smile

Speaking for myself, It has all the tenses/conjugations for each verb and each verb has it's own page,it points out helping verbs and other things,If you buy it off ebay total is about $25.00. This is just my experience and I have found it very helpful.
