Why are the letters K , W and X not really used in words but still are in the alphabet?

K and W are used in words of foriegn origin. X is used in words, but I assume not b not to in the beginning a word unless it is of Indian orgin.

They just aren't I guess-I mean, the letters "z", "q" and "x" are not used very often in the English alphabet, yet they're still there.
