there are no rules about this. just it is female. Just remember this: when a word ends in "a" is suposed to be female. And when a word ends with "o", male but with "e" sometimes it changes.
la casa; la ropa; la mesa; la camisa; la computadora; la puerta el payaso; el zapato; el horno; el cielo; el dedo;
la leche; el televisor; la televisión; el pantalón; el árbol, etc.
The "e" ending is more gender nuetral. The "a" ending is subjunctive however. El problema. El programa. Many rules aren't hard and fast. Think about the English language and you will see how often we don't follow any rules.
Not all feminine nouns end in "a", and not all masculine nouns end in "o". Here's a link that will hopefully explain it better for you.
