Correction for this sentence pretty please

I want to say "It can help me better my listening skills because why learn how Spanish if I don't understand what people say?"

My sentence in Spanish is: "Puede mejorar mis habilidas de escuchar porque ¿por qué apredende el castellano si no comprendo que unas personas dicen?"

Any corrections would be great... Thanks a lot!

It can help me better my listening skills because why learn how Spanish if I don't understand what people say?

I don't think that "because" is the word that you are looking for here. "Because" implies that your following clause will supply a reason/manner in which it can help your listening skills. What you have written is a bit of a non sequitur. It might be better to say something like:

It is important to better my listening skills because it makes little sense to learn how [to speak] Spanish if I don't understand what people say.

It can help me better my listening skills which is important because, after all - why learn how [to speak] Spanish if I don't understand what people say?

I would use "improve" instead of "better" - Gocika, FEB 25, 2010

I do agree with Izan that the grammar is a bit off in English. Even if you are going to say the sentence like this I would avoid saying "porque, ¿Por qué?" in the translation because that sounds very odd to me in Spanish.

Me puede ayudar mejorar mis habilidades de escuchar porque no hay para que aprender español si no puedo entender lo que dicen la gente.

It can help me better my listening skills because there's no reason to learn Spanish if I can't understand what people say.
