Mi amiga, que acaba de enterarse que está embarazada, está destetando a su primer hijo porque no quiere dar el pecho a dos niños a la vez.

My friend, who just found out that she's pregnant, is weaning her first child because she doesn't want to breastfeed two at once.

Because this is a learning site, I am going to leave this post as an example of how NOT to use "destetar", even though the sentence in English is an acceptable use of "to wean". See the comments below. In sum, "destetar" should only be used when referring to babies or young animals.

Debo destetarme de dulces porque mi última prueba de nivel de azúcar en la sangre fue demasiado alta

I must wean myself from sweets because my latest blood sugar test was too high.

Lis, I've only heard the word "destetar" with babies... :) In that case, "Debo dejar los dulces,or debo olvidarme de los dulces" sounds definitly better :) - Benz, Feb 22, 2010
I got this straight off the site dictionary: Destetar [des-tay-tar’] article & verb transitive 1. To wean, to ablactate. verb reflexive 2. To wean oneself from an evil habit or custom. - LaBurra, Feb 22, 2010
Maybe sugar isn't an "evil habit" - could you use "destetar" in the sense of "weaning oneself from a drug" maybe? - LaBurra, Feb 22, 2010
no, cannnot be used that way - 00494d19, Feb 22, 2010
I just asked a Mexican friend - definitely only for weaning babies, at least in Mexico - mountaingirl123, Feb 22, 2010
At least we've generated some interesting discussion around this word! - LaBurra, Feb 22, 2010
getting my vote, good example as how the definition was in itself incorrect, way to go lis;) - 00494d19, Feb 22, 2010

Cuándo nosotros tomamos los cerditos de su madre para destetarlos, ellos lloraron tan tristemente para ella que yo casi los puse atrás en su jaula.

When we took the piglets from their mother to wean them, they cried so sadly for her that I almost put them back in her cage.

Parece que nunca fui destetado porque aún me encanta las tetas.

It seems that I was never weaned, because I still love breasts.

Mi perrita es 'Beagle" media con "Shepherd" media" . ¡Que es mi perrita! My girl puppy, or she dog, was a small and pretty 'Beagle'. In realtiy she was weaned before the proper time and was growing bigger and rapidly growing. My girl puppy is half "Beagle' and half "Shepard". That is my girl puppy dog!
