Imperfect VS. Preterite Help

Question

When do u use Imperfect and when do i use Preterite?

Because our teacher told us, if it happens again and again then it is imperfect....

i dont understand because I thought it was when u dont know when it starts or ends (imperfect)

I think she was referring to a habitual action.

I used to go to the park on Fridays.

Iba al parque los viernes.

No beginning or end to this Friday ritual is mentioned.
