more likely they were carrying carabines 30-30 and were wearing around their chest belts full of bullets for the carabines. I am sorry I cant thin of the englsih name for those belts. I was in the infantry once, I we wore them the difference was that we used the ones made of cloth. By the way have you heard the song "carabina 30/30" is in youtube.Rosita Quintana - Carabina 30 30

or,Francisco Villa - carabina 30 30

This was a very difficult sentence. Maybe like the style of writing in the novel I thought I saw a definition about swords somewhere in my search then it disappeared. I defer to the Great Q but as one that is wont to play the fool I will interject that another meaning of carabina is chaperone, terciado can mean unite and part of the story is coming of age of a young man.( I am getting all of this from this dictionary)

I wonder if they show up with chaperones and join with the ?'roundfaces/chinstraps? (the spanish dict definition of carilleras) Maybe that is a slang term for a group of guys in the village?

I read about the book on the web, but maybe context to the particular scene would clarify all of this.

I would guess that it means:

the came armed with carbine rifles and sheathed swords

or something to that effect.
