Are there any differences? When would you use one word over the other? Any insight on this please?

Piso is a synonym of suelo in latin america (argentina, uruguay... I remember it from the football matches, they use it a lot).

This word can come also from the verb pisar conjuged as 1st person "yo piso el suelo" "I step on the ground".

Piso mainly for spanish people means "flat" or "appartment" the place where you live.

Suelo is ground for us.

Piso is the only way that I've heard to say "floor" as in level of a building. Primer piso, segundo piso, etc. (First floor, second floor) Otherwise, I think that they are interchangeable.

But, for "level" of a building "piso" and "planta" are also synonyms. - Luciente, Feb 20, 2010
"Planta baja" is Ground floor." Next come "Primer, segundo, tercer pisos," etc. - 005faa61, Feb 20, 2010
