I'm reading some Allende. Here's the context:
Nací en el último cuarto de una casa sombría y crecí entre muebles antiguos...
I'm tempted to say "shady" here but I wonder if it could be "bleak" given that she goes on to say:
pero eso no logró hacerme melancólica
Any help is welcome.

Also el último cuarto de *una casa sombría I'm taking último cuarto as the last bedroom. Perhaps in English "the back bedroom"

bleak house = as in The bleak house = La casa sombría, by Charles Dickens.
el útlimo cuarto = the last room, possibly the last one down a corridor.
