Nota Cultural: Santo Domingo

Below is interesting cultural/historical information related to one of the many Spanish speaking countries. There are several ways to participate in this thread. If you are up to a challenge, try translating. You can also add information, pictures, etc. about any of the words mentioned. For instance, you could add a sentence (Spanish and English) about Bartolomé Colón or a picture of a colonial building in Santo Domingo. It's your choice. Just make sure it relates to the topic in some way. smile

Nota Cultural Santo Domingocapital de la República Dominicana, es la más antigua de las ciudades americanas fundadas por los conquistdores. Fue fundada en 1496 por Bartolomé Colón, un hermano de Cristóbal Colón. La ciudad fue modernizada después que un huricán la dejó casi totalmente destruida, pero conserva cierto carácter colonial con sus muchos edificios y monumentos de interés histórico.

Translation: Cultural Note: Santo Domingo-- Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic. It is the oldest of the cities in the Americas (that was) founded by the conquistadors. It was founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus, a brother of Christopher Columbus. The city was modernized after a hurricane left it completely destroyed, but it preserves the true colonial character with many buildings and monuments with historical interest.

Now that I have posted, I can see the comments by Renae about the brothers names. Essentially I agree with Renae. - Moe, Feb 19, 2010
However, I have used their anglicized names because that is how they are better known in the USofA and in Canada. But I still like Renae's treatment. - Moe, Feb 19, 2010
I can usually pick sides, but in this case, I think either translation of the names is o.k. - Nicole-B, Feb 19, 2010
It's good that you didn't look at Renae's translation first. When I do translation posts, I don't like to look at the answers of others until I'm finished. It's too easy to cheat that way. jeje - Nicole-B, Feb 19, 2010

Muy bien Renae. What about the brothers...any ideas? - Nicole-B, Feb 19, 2010
I figure they have to be Bartholomew and Christopher Columbus, but I like the preserving the spanish names because the history belongs to Santo Domingo in this case not America!:) - renaerules, Feb 19, 2010
