I suppose you mean running as in a race?

(Ellos) empezaron a correr Empezar start

Another possibility might be

Comenzaron a funcionar They started to work as in function (engines running) but I'm less confident of that one. Comenzar to begin

By the way I checked my answers in the Translation thing on this site. Do take advantage of it although it's not infallible!

To start is "empezar". They started is "empezaron".

To run is "correr" if you're talking about a person or "andar" if you're talking about a mcahine (a clock or something).

Empezaron a correr. They started to run.
