FALSE FRIENDS OR COGNATES

.

Se denominan false friends (falsos amigos) o cognates (cognados) a las palabras que por escribirse de la misma forma (o parecida) en español son confundidas, pero que en realidad en inglés significan otra cosa.

.

Por ejemplo, "conductor " en inglés no significa conductor, sino que se refiere al director de la orquesta o al cobrador que se encuentra en los autobuses. Aquí se encuentra una lista de los false friends o cognados más conocidos.

.

Some examples:

.

an abstract: resumen (y no abstracto)

to achieve: lograr (y no archivar, que se dice to file)

actual: real, efectivo (y no actual, que se dice current)

actually: en realidad (y no actualmente, que se dice nowadays, at present)

to advertise: anunciar (y no advertir, que se dice to warn)

.

There's a very long list here: http://www.saberingles.com.ar/curious/falsefriends.html

Words like ‘mother’ and ‘brother’ have common ancestry, and it is customary to refer to them as cognates. Thus, English´s mother is cognate with Latin´s mater, although it does not derive directly from it.

More examples of words with common ancestry 'cognatesÑ English mother brother

German mutter bruder

Gaelic mathair braithair

Latin mater frater

Greek meter phrater

Sanskrit matr bhratr

Indo-European mater bhrater

Spokojnoj no?i...good night..buenas noches

False cognates are pairs of words in the same or different languages that are similar in form and meaning but have different roots. That is, they appear to be, or are sometimes considered, cognates, when in fact they are not.

Example:

Teo in Greek means God.

And in Nahuatl Teo means God (!!!)

However, Nahuatls and Greeks never met. I consider this one of the biggest false cognates in the linguistic history of mankind.

Cognates are two/more words that share a common origin (they may/may not be in the same language).
