Que significa exactamente: cabia esperar? Sera' "that was to be expected"?
y porque se dice: en demasia? Se' que significa en mucha cantidad.

I think that "cabía esperar" means something like "there was room to expect that", or that could be expected, not necessarily that it had to happen, but that it was likely.
But see what a native speaker says...
