Cuando se usa la forma de "Quan"?

¡cuán fuerte....! can be used on certain occasions but most times it can be too refined. That is the reason why you can see it in books and in films. In poetry you can see it too.

I cannot imagine one of my relatives saying: oh, cuán fuerte es el dolor. It is a language full of afectation. Of course it is possible but it can sound too pompous.
