Querer imperfect vs conditional

Querer imperfect vs conditional

"I wanted to attend a mass in Spanish", "quería asistir una masa en español" but the conditional tense of querer is querria. So someone at the mass asks me what I'm doing there and I respond as translated above. But how do they know that I mean "I wanted to attend.." vs "" I would like to attend.." All in the roll of the tongue?
