Don is a courtesy title placed before the first names of men.

Example: Juan González.

You could say: "Don Juan", but "Don González" would not be correct.

You also could say "Señor González"...

Remember "Don" + First Name....

I don't know if it's a term of respect or not, women usually get very upset when they are called "Doña" (because this is usually used to refer to an old woman), not so much men when they are called "Don".

With "D". Don Gonzalez in place of Señor Gonzalez. (Sr. Gonzalez) if male and Doña Gonzalez in place of Señora Gonzalez. (Sra. Gonzalez)
