What is the difference between "Los niños se están deslizando hacia abajo." and "Los niños están deslizando hacia abajo."?? What does the "se" accomplish?

The "se" indicates that the children themselves are physically sliding. If you don't include the "se" I have to ask you what is it that the children are sliding? A toy perhaps?

You can either say: "Los niños se están deslizando" or "Los niños están deslizándose"
