A is not used "in between sentences" per se, rather a is a preposition that means "to" or "at" in general. Because of Spanish word order, these are frequently found at the beginning of a sentence.

Example:

A mí me parece rojo. (To me, it looks red)

A mi casa bebemos mucha agua. (At my house we drink lots of water.) (It's a bad example, because, according to Mokay, Spanish speaking people would actually say "En mi casa...")

After ir when expressing future actions.

Between two verbs when the first is an action of some sort.
