Christmas carol "Riu, riu, riu

In the Spanish Christmas carol "Riu, riu, riu", one of the lines reads "Dios guardó el lobo de nuestra señora". At first glance by an English speaker that seems to mean "God protected the wolf from our Lady." Of course I know what it really means, but I would like to hear from a native Spanish speaker what is going on in that line.
