As in the food, not a command to dogs. Is there even a word for it?

On a related note, when I was in Mexico last week I had some cornbread. I thought it would be called "pan de maíz" or something like that, but my Mexican coworker called it something else that I can't remember. He used a word that refers to the corn kernel, since maíz refers to the entire plant.

Can someone clue me in on the Mexican phrase for cornbread?

My dictionary (Word Magic) gives "pan de maíz" or "torta de maíz". Mazorca is probably the word your coworker used for corn. - CalvoViejo, Feb 8, 2010
Mazorca usually indicates an ear of corn (corn on the cob), not just the kernel. - CalvoViejo, Feb 8, 2010
How about pan de elote or maybe pan de choclo Mexicans seem to really like words that start with "CH" - Sharon-Cash, Dec 15, 2015

Asking that question is a little like asking, "How do you say "taco" or "enchilada" in English. jejeje. I doubt if such a thing is consumed in Latin America or Spain anyway.

(I know this is an old, old post, but I felt like putting in my "two centavos' " worth.

In parts of Spanish-speaking countries, English expressions or those close to them are used. Sandwich, donas (doughnuts) "maltie-milk" -in Argentina, and many others.

Para el beneficio de Rey Misterio, he aqui unos "hush puppies" Mmmmmmm. ¡Sabrosísimas!

Ok, Como se dice " Uggboots" ? - ray76, Dec 16, 2015
Hushpuppies here are soft shoes like Moccasins. - ray76, Dec 16, 2015
Same here in the States, Ray, but they're not so popular any more. The term probably came to be used for the food as parents used then to keep there children quiet. "Hush, Puppy, and eat this." ;-) - Winkfish, Dec 16, 2015

A hush puppy in the US is a ball of corn meal that is deep fried. It´s not made from potatoes.

Yes, it's deep fried corn meal. I know the second part too, considering I mentioned them to my Mexican friend, and the first thing she said was SHOES?! haha. - SavviVague, Feb 8, 2010

The word I learned for hot dog was perrito caliente or perro caliente... Anyway, the food I was asking about has nothing to do with hot dogs. - SavviVague, Feb 9, 2010

That indeed is the recipe for a corn dog, but my question was about hush puppies and hush puppies are not corn dogs nor do they contain hot dogs/sausages/franks. - SavviVague, Feb 9, 2010

Here in South Louisiana, hushpuppies are quite common (and loved). Basically they are balls of sweet corn meal. There are many variations - people add different things.

The closest thing I found in the Spanish-speaking world was a buñuelo.
