Settle an argument: Es una foto de mí

Question

How would one say This is a picture of me.? I say that technically, it should read: Es una foto de mí. My cousin says that foto de mí is not said and instead, should say something like una foto donde salgo yo. I replied by saying that while his version certainly works and expresses the same thing conceptually, it is not a true translation of This is a picture of me. He says I should say Es una foto mía, but I argue that by saying that, I am actually saying that the photo belongs to me, not that I appear in it.

Ideas?

I go with "Esta es una foto de mí."

The last sentence does look like you possess the photo. But you better wait for the more erudite to present their case.

all you have to say is ''esta is me foto'' if you want to be more specific you could say '' esta es mi foto de mi persona'' - manotas, Feb 20, 2011

I'm fascinated by this proposed option. My gut feeling is that it just wouldn't be said this way, but maybe I'm wrong?

Es una foto de mí...this works in that you will be understood,however I think that it is incorrect, why? it just does not sound right.

I vote for es una foto mia. "Es mi foto" means this picture belongs to me. However, ,to avoid confusion.if I were writng a message,I would say," Yo aparesco en esta foto" ,.

I have to research this question.Since, I know Spanish by inspiration and not perspiration. But, most of the time I am correct-which surprises me a whole bunch.

This should not be a problem. The same ambiguity exists in both languages. "I saw your photo in X magazine" and "Vi la foto tuya (tu foto) en la revista X" can mean the same things but can refer to either a photo of/by you. There are a variety of ways to resolve the ambiguity (some are language dependent). In English, "I saw the picture of you..." would suggest that you were the subject (and, possibly, the author but probably not). In Spanish "Vi la foto de ti."would suggest that you were the subject (and, possibly, the author but probably not).

To emphasize that the respondent took (but was not the subject), one could say "the photo that you took" / "la foto que sacaste".

This is the correct way to say it. En esta foto estoy yo. The following is not gramatically correct,"Es una foto de mí..."
