How come I earned negative points by votes on my answers?

Question

I haven't been around for a while and have only found out this week that the whole site has been altered. Most of the changes I get and think are fun. But there's something about the voting system that I don't get.

Today two members have obviously voted on two of my answers but my profile indicates that those votes earned me negative points. How can that happen since a vote, in my eyes, is something positive. Ayone? Please? Heidita?

I see one of those negatives is on a question I voted up and answered aswell. I thought the question was a good one so I voted it up. By unvoting the negative disappears? I don't get it.... - chicasabrosa, Feb 4, 2010

The same thing happened to me...(I posted a question about it too!!) but there were no explanations, and unfortunately, for today I've already reached my 200 limit.... I guess everyone just needs to stop voting on my answers and questions for a few hours!! jejeje

Oh well, at least I know that people appreciate my posts, even though I don't get rep for them, that's what really counts, right?

The 200 point per 24 hours seems to be tracked minute to minute by the computer.Sometimes I just wait to answer something or vote something up if I am being point concious for myself. If you have 193 points and someone votes you up you will get 7 points on that vote. In the past it seems people would get full credit for your vote if you exceeded your 200 point limit or went about your ?10 vote per day limit.You just wouldn't get points until you fell below 200 or the 24 hour limit was up on the votes you made.

The subtraction is new to me.And weird.

I trust the way the software handles the tallies. It's related to the way it handles 24-hours, and as the clock "ticks" away, the 24-hour period changes.

But I would appreciate a better and clearer explanation than mine from one of the administrators.

Yes, Marianne. I just checked her tally, and it seems that's so. Last time I looked, she was at 195; now it's 185. (My vote would have given her 200.)

Must have something to do with how the 24-hour period is handled by the software? Meaning that an earlier up-vote no longer applies because it was done more than 24 hours ago?

It is confusing.

I think it was installed as a rule to be able to show everybody's rep tally. If one gets too many points, the amount of points might grow too fast and become too large to put next to your avatar - chicasabrosa, Feb 4, 2010

Forgot to mention that this also means that when you vote up other users' questions or answers, you will also receive a zero in your tally.

Again, there is a 200 point limit during a 24-hour period for earning reputation points.
