You would use an infinitive (verb ending in ar, er, ir) only if you literally mean "to do something"

I need to take notes. - Necesito sacar notas.

"Necesito sacarme buenas notas para seguir estudios superiores en ( la Universidad, Instituto, Academia, etc.)"

"Generalmente saco buenas notas porque necesito tener altas calificaciones para postular a una beca " (es un ejemplo)

In English it would be: because I need good notes. So in Spanish you would match by conjugating "necesitar" and changing it to "necesito"
