How do you conjugate "estar" in the past tense?

I would like to know how to conjegate estar in the past tense. So far i have learned that the ending to TU is iste but it seems not to follow in this verb. I am completly confused.

Estar is irregular in the preterite tense=complete action Stem-estuv yo-estuve,tú-estuviste,usted-estuvo,nosotros-estuvimos,vosotros-estuvisteis,ellos-estuvieron

"Estar" is an irregular verb and something you'll need to memorize. There is a conjugation tool here at Spanishdict, which is very helpful.
