Un problema de traducción

Hola amigos! Tengo que traducir la siguiente oración de inglés al español. "If he would have known how dificult it was going to be, he would not have answered the phone."

Hasta el momento, tengo, "Si hubiera sabido como difícil fuera a estar (?), no contestaría el teléfono. ¿Fuera a estar es correcto por "it was going to be?"

I don't know about the word "cuan" What is its meaning?
