Yes...in a hurry on a Saturday...that is why we have the "edit", which I must now use to change my post, too!! - Janice, Jan 30, 2010
If you will allow me, though, to correct a bit of spelling (although the original is in Russian:-) "disturbed", "intended" and "entertaining". - Janice, Jan 30, 2010
Thank you again - 00769608, Jan 30, 2010

I have just been looking through yet another explanation of pronunciation in my new Collins Unabridged (Universal is in the name somewheregrin) electronic dictionary (with which I am very pleased, by the way!)

I do not know if you are going to be helping us more with understanding which to choose when we hear and must write, i.e., spell, I hope so!!!

In any case, with regards to the pronunciation, besides the excellent description provided here by Lazarus1907, b/v is described in my new dictionary this way:

b, v

These two letters have the same value in Spanish. There are two distinct pronunciations depending on position and context:

[b]

At the start of the breath group and after the written letters m and n (pronounced [m]) the sound is like the English b

bomba boda enviar

[?] In all other positions the sound is between an English b and v in which the lips do not quite meet (called a bilabial fricative, a sound unknown in English) haba severo yo voy de Vigo

Of course none of that helps one spell the words correctly, so your post is very much appreciated.
